Professional Placement 2 – Introduction

My second professional placement at Earnshaw State College marks a significant step in my development as a pre-service Industrial Technology and Design teacher. Having spent the year already working part-time across Grades 7, 9, and 11, I’ve built relationships with staff and students and developed a strong understanding of the school’s culture and expectations. This next phase—three weeks of full-time teaching—provides the opportunity to consolidate that experience, extend my practice, and demonstrate readiness for graduate-level teaching.

With the addition of a Year 10 Metalwork class and a Year 11 Graphics class, my goal is to deepen my technical instruction across materials and design contexts. I aim to strengthen my classroom management through consistent routines, clear expectations, and a balance of authority and approachability. These next few weeks will be a testing ground for refining instructional flow—how lessons transition from theory to practical, and how I can engage every learner, especially those less confident in workshop settings.

Throughout the placement, I will reflect daily on my teaching strategies, student engagement, and assessment practices, aligning each to the Australian Professional Teaching Standards. In particular, I will focus on Standards 3.3 (using teaching strategies), 4.2 (managing classroom activities), and 6.3 (engaging with colleagues to improve practice). My overarching goal is to leave this placement with greater confidence, stronger classroom presence, and a more defined sense of the teacher I’m becoming.
